How to visualize Twitter networks with Gephi

Today we’ll see how to visualize use Twitter stream plugin in Gephi. Gephi is an open-source network analysis and visualization software package written in Java on the NetBeans platform (more at Wikipedia). We’ll also get to learn to create apps in Twitter.

For the Initial setup you’ll require
1. Gephi- Download here!
2. Twitter account- if you don’t have a Twitter account, create using this link

For the First step go to Tools > Plugins and search for TwitterStreamingImporter and install the plugin(see image for reference)

Once the plugin is installed you’ll find TwitterStreaming tab in left side.

Click on the credentials then a new Twitter API credentials window will open with the four blank fields.

Click on the link https://apps.twitter.com and sign in to your twitter account and fill the details. Check here for complete documentation on how to create apps in Twitter.

Once the app is created go to you apps and then click on Keys and Access token.

Now go back to Gephi and copy and paste the Keys and Tokens accordingly. Once the setup is done you can start fetching data from twitter and analyzing it.

Add the hashtags, User to follow or location you want to fetch and click on connect and that’s done. Click on disconnect once you get enough data.

I’ll post more tutorials on Gephi for more Network Visualization.
